Taqleed - The Favourite For The First Big Hadicap Of The Flat Season

John Gosden and Richard Hills said on Friday they were worried the ground will prove too fast for their William Hill Lincoln favourite Taqleed.

Taqleed is set to go off clear favourite for Saturday's big handicap at Doncaster, which is the first major betting race of the recently commenced Flat season.

The Gosden horse is 4-1 favourite with the sponsors and no bigger elsewhere, with Prime Exhibit, generally twice the price, his biggest threat as the market sees it.

Richard Hills - freshly returned from Meydan duty - will ride Taqleed and shares Gosden's concerns about the fast ground at Doncaster.

He said: "I haven't sat on Taqleed because I've only just got back from Dubai. We are coming back a furlong and the ground is going to be against me.

"I would imagine it may be on the fast side, but he is in great form and depending on the ground I think he will run a nice race. He is progressing."

Jon Pullin, clerk of the course at Doncaster, on Friday decided not to add to the 17mm of water that has been applied to track since last week.

Despite no overnight rain on Thursday and only a "very light" shower on Friday morning, Pullin said the ground had retained its moisture well and is confident that Saturday's fixture will be run on "consistent" good ground on all parts of the course. "

"After walking the course on Friday morning it was clear that the ground had retained its moisture and we decided not to water further," said Pullin.

Following a further inspection of the track at 4pm, Pullin gave the overall GoingStick reading as 7.8. On the straight mile, on which the William Hill Lincoln is run, a reading of 7.3 was taken from the middle to far side and 7.4 from the middle to stands' side, indicating there is unlikely to be any significant draw bias.

Pullin did, however, say that there is "a slightly better covering of grass middle to stands' side."
