Steve Whitely, a 60-year-old Heating Engineer from Devon was made one of his twice annual visits to Exeter race course and this time it really paid off. The Tote Jackpot is prize pool created from bets made by punters. It is then shared between winners who make the correct picks during the day. However, because Mr Whitely had chosen relative outsiders on his card, he ended up having the whole prize pool to himself.Mr Whiteley, told reporters: ‘When my mate said to me after the fourth race that there were only seven people in the whole country left in the jackpot, I couldn’t believe it.‘Then at the last he said there is only one left and it’s this ticket, I didn’t look. I was shaking.’ He said: ‘It’s difficult to say how I came up with my selections. At first, I had two in each race and that was going to cost £32, so I scrapped that. 'I'd never had a go at the Jackpot but one of my mates said it might be a million quid so I said, “All right, I’ll have a go”. The lucky punter intends to continue his frugal lifestyle despite the big win. However he intends to treat his wife Jill, who turns 60 today.
