Do Bookies Have All the Power?

Hi Everyone Came across an interting article the other and it caused some debate amongst the team at Gambling Systems Reviews.

Let us know what you think of this article published in the Gaurdian this week.

It is a sign of the times that recently published researched showing that almost half a million Britons have a gambling problem went largely unnoticed.

The damage done to those people, and the friends and relatives who are also affected, is readily dismissed by some with an appeal to notions of free will and individual choice. It was their choice to gamble; their problem is their choosing. The same logic gets the gambling industry off the hook: the casinos, betting shops and gambling sites are simply responding to consumer demand.

Where has that left us? We have grown accustomed to the idea that schoolchildren should walk past five or six betting shops between their school and the bus stop. Or that sporting coverage should be punctuated by adverts with "live" odds, inviting viewers to gamble on the outcome. Our distance from the problem can give comfort. Many of us gamble, but mainly online, over the telephone, or we fill in a lottery slip at the corner shop without being confronted by problem gambling. The insides of every new betting shop are a mystery.

The garish colours splashed across the front of bookmakers' shops block the depression that lies behind the plastic advertising boards. The penniless young men glued to virtual roulette wheels while others queue are invisible to the passing public. You're prevented from seeing the desperation of men surrounded by scrunched up, worthless betting slips that represent their afternoon's endeavours.

The romantic vision of bookmakers filled with scores of working-class men betting on horses is out of date. Now a large proportion of bookmakers' takings come from touch-screen betting terminals. They offer you the chance to bet up to £100 a time on casino games that take place at up to three times the speed. These are no longer just bookmakers' shops, they are casinos, operating openly and freely in a growing number of locations on our high streets.

The government's survey data tells us that the average problem gambler is male, young, unemployed and from a deprived neighbourhood. The bookmakers know where to find them. That's why Newham has three times as many bookmakers as Richmond-upon-Thames. It is a predatory industry that profits from poverty.

Gambling laws that were weakened under the last Labour government have given gambling firms free rein over our high streets. Loopholes in the legislation are being exploited so that banks can be converted into bookmakers' shops with no need for planning permission. In the depths of the recession, when people in our inner cities were most in need of financial advice, they found a virtual roulette wheel instead. A social crisis caused by gambling on financial markets is being exacerbated by invitations to gamble on high streets.

People "demand" the opportunity to gamble away money they do not have, just like people "demand" money from loan sharks at extortionate interest rates. This is a warped, empty type of freedom, in which the powerful are free to exploit the vulnerable. Unless we establish some speed limits on the road, we are only going to need more and more ambulances.

All TV advertising of gambling before the 9pm watershed must stop. If people really want to have a bet then they will do. Rather than abolishing the Gambling Commission, the government should be looking at stopping old-fashioned bookies' shops becoming soulless mini-casinos. Most of all, residents need their voice heard. We deserve a say if a company wants to build the ninth betting shop on a 300m stretch of high street. This is not just a question of consumer demand – we walk, cycle, drive and shop on these streets every day.

In Britain all parties talk about devolving power – away from ministers and mandarins to councillors and communities. But it's a patronising, half-hearted offer that treats people only as consumers, not as parents, residents and citizens who have wider concerns. Ministers drone on about localism but people are still denied a say over so many of the things that matter to them. Many will decry this as "paternalism" but this is not about prohibiting gambling. People simply want to have a say over more than which horse to back at the 4:20 at Epsom.

Sir Alex Ferguson knows Manchester United can afford no mistakes in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League tie against Marseille.

The two sides played out a turgid goalless draw in the first stage of the last-16 clash at Stade Velodrome on Wednesday night, meaning nothing other than a win is guaranteed to take United into the quarter-finals when they meet their French opponents at Old Trafford.

A similar position did not prove a problem for Ferguson's men back in 2008, when they reached the Champions League final on the back of an equally tight first-leg in their semi-final against Barcelona.

They have, however, lost from such positions, although Ferguson feels the 1998 quarter-final loss to Monaco is too far back to carry any significant

"At this stage of the competition, away goals count. And you always worry. At this stage of the season, you are not playing any bad teams.

"But you would have to say, Manchester United at home, we have a good chance.

"All we have to do is win the game. I don't care if it is 10-9."

Ferguson admitted Wednesday night's draw was lacklustre, but was buoyed by Wayne Rooney's display after the forward produced an industrious shift on the left wing.

"He did what we wanted him to do," said Ferguson.

"The way we normally set up, with Nani or Ryan Giggs on the left, gives us more natural width.

"But Wayne worked hard, as he always does. He has great spirit but he was better when we played him through the middle in a 4-4-2 at the end."

Ferguson was also pleased with the manner with which Patrice Evra handled a tricky return to his homeland.

As a former Monaco player, Evra was always likely to be targeted by the Marseille fans.

However, his involvement in the World Cup strike wrangle made him public enemy number one.

"I expected it - and so did Patrice," said Ferguson.

"But he wasn't affected by it and he put in a strong performance. I had no worries about that."

Spanish News Paper Apologises Over Fake Offside Pictures (see the pictures here)

Spanish sports daily AS has been forced to apologise after a "computer graphics error" saw it airbrush out a player in an image of a controversial offside decision.

Dani Alves set up David Villa's opening goal in Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao last Sunday but there was some suggestion that he might have been offside when he received the ball from team-mate Xavi.

However, AS seemed to leave its readers in no doubt that Alves WAS offside in its Monday print edition as the paper's  photo of the incident saw the last Athletic Bilbao defender mysteriously absent from the shot.

The paper was forced to correct the error with a "before and after" screengrab of the respective photos to set the record straight (see below).

"Pedimos disculpas por un error en la infografía del 1-0," was the headline which translates to: "We apologise for the error in the computer graphics in the 1-0 incident."

AS's motives for doctoring the photo might have something to do with the fact that it is a Madrid-based paper that focuses much of its coverage on Barcelona's fierce rivals Real.

However, the paper's logic seems all the more questionable when you consider that Alves still looked offside even with the last man added to the photo.

West Ham 5 - 1 Burnley (FA Cup Joy For The Hammers)

Hitzlsperger got the rout under way with a 25-year swerving effort before Carlton Cole struck twice inside three minutes just after half-time.

Cole curled his effort past Stephen Grant for his second effort. It was a classy finish in stark contrast to his first just minutes earlier.

The England international was marginally offside when he received Mark Noble's ball to set him up for a one-on-one with Grant.

A poor touch allowed the goalkeeper to block the initial effort but the rebound fell kindly to Cole who swept the ball into the goal with his left leg while seated on the ground.

Further goals from Winston Reid and Freddie Sears completed the wi.

Avram Grant was pleased to see his side earn some relief from their Premier League woes with a 5-1 FA Cup victory over Burnley.

The Hammers, currently second-bottom of the league table, romped to a decisive win over their Championship opponents at Upton Park to reach the quarter-finals of the cup, where a trip to Stoke awaits.

And manager Grant, who has now guided three sides to the final eight of the tournament after previously reaching the same stage with Chelsea and Portsmouth, was happy to see his team show some good form.

He said: "We are the Premier League team so normally we need to win these games, but they are difficult because they are playing well and tactically they are very good.

"But we played well in the second half and it was difficult for them."

West Ham were able to spring the offside trap several times and punish Burnley.

"We spoke about this at half-time because the line of the defence was too high," added the manager.

"We passed the ball better in the second half and scored the goals."

While Grant admits the league is his priority, the manager was pleased to continue a morale-lifting run amounting to just one defeat in their last five games in all competitions.

"Our target and first priority is the league, but it's always good to come into the quarter-finals of the cup," he said.

"We want to win every game. We know in the cup you lose one game and you're out, but in the league there is always the next game to make things better."

Gattuso Gets 4 Match Ban

AC MILAN star Gennaro Gattuso has been slapped with a four-match ban for his headbutt on Joe Jordan.

The Italian midfielder lost his cool at the end of last Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham at the San Siro.

He was already banned from the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie after picking up a yellow card.

But he will now face a further spell on the sidelines following his post-match antics.

Crazed Gattuso confronted Spurs No2 Jordan and, after exchanging verbal blows, headbutted the 59-year-old Scot.

It sparked a huge confrontation between players and coaches from both sides.

And UEFA have acted by banning Gattuso for "gross unsporting conduct".

A statement from European football's governing body said: "The control and disciplinary body ruled that Gattuso had assaulted Jordan after the match.

"Gattuso, who was also cautioned in the 76th minute of the game, is already suspended for the return leg of the tie against Tottenham after receiving three yellow cards.

"Consequently, the four-match suspension applies to the next four UEFA club competition matches for which he would be eligible."

Gattuso has three days to appeal against the ban.

Are The Arsenal Duo Set For Milan? Read The Latest Transfer Talk

Arsenal's victory over Barcelona has made Europe stand up and take notice of Arsene Wenger's team and now the European champions are apparently after two of their players.

According to the News of the World, Internazionale are lining up a £42m double swoop for Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin.

The story is a bit of an "ifs and buts" unsourced affair but the paper reckons that "Inter believe they can persuade Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to sell if the price is right," and add that "Wenger may feel the cash would enable him to splash out on younger, fresher talent in the summer."

The back of the same paper cries "Luka who Fergie wants," as they link Tottenham's Luka Modric with a move to Manchester United.

£35m is the figure quoted while the paper also says Everton's Jack Rodwell (whose value seems to have gone up £10m to £25m in the last 24 hours) and Sunderland's Jordan Henderson (£15m) are also tagets.

The Mail on Sunday claims that Manchester City also want Rodwell though and would be willing to eclipse any bid that United make.

City being linked with players is nothing new of course, and the Sunday People claims they will make a move for £30m-rated Valencia midfielder Juan Mata. City already helped out debt-ridden Valencia last summer by signing David Silva.

Going back to United and they want to bring in Marseille's Mathieu Valbuen according to the People. The 26-year-old will cost in the region of £12m and United fans can get a good look at him against United in the Champions League this week.

There is plenty of speculation about Carlo Ancellotti's Chelsea future across all the papers.

Fulham boss Mark Hughes is linked as potential replacement (News of the World), while the Mail even goes so far as to link Jose Mourinho with a return while offering up Marco van Basten as an alternative.

The Mirror claims that Ancellotti is safe "for now" but say that a host of players could leave in the summer with Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Florent Malouda, John Obi Mikel, Yuri Zhirkov, Paulo Ferreira, Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou all listed as potential casualties.

A bit more exciting for Chelsea fans is the rumour in the Sunday Express linking them with a £30m bid for Brazilian teenager Neymar in the summer having already failed with a £22m bid for the Santos star six months ago.

Chelsea, along with Tottenham and Arsenal, are also listed as one of Connor Wickham's suitors in the Mail. The 17-year-old Ipswich striker is expected to make a £12m move to the Premier League in the summer.

The People claims that Michael Owen will quit Manchester United in the summer and lists Everton and Sunderland as potential destinations.

The Sunday Mirror claims that Harry Redknapp's impeding court case on tax evasion charges could be severe enough to see him leave Tottenham and mentions Everton boss David Moyes as a potential replacement.

Liverpool might have to take a £12m cut on flop £17m signing Alberto Aquilani. Juventus want to make his loan deal permanent but are only prepared to pay £5m. (Mirror)

Martin Skrtel could also leave Anfield with Wolfsburg preparing a £5m bid (Star) but the club will offer Pepe Reina a £10,000-a-week pay rise to try and keep him at the club. (The People).

Newcastle want £10m-rated West Ham striker Carlton Cole to replace Andy Carroll who of course signed for Liverpool on transfer deadline day. (Mirror)

Deja Vu Football is a betting system that works by betting on score lines in either the English, Scottish or German premier league games. they send out between 6 and 12 selections a week, predominantly at the weekend when most of the leagues are in action.

an example selection will look like this;-

(Hoffenheim v Hannover – BET 3-0, 4-0, 2-0, 3-1) so you essentially end up with 4 bets for each selection.

However the big winners started to disappear and our bank balance slowly started to drop we waited for the losing run to end but unfortunately the bank just kept falling until we had nothing left. Our high point was £989 on the 27th November we never reached those heights again and ended up finishing our trial with a loss of £36.

On a brighter note the guys at deja vu are was quick to reply to emails and answer questions and do run a good professional service with selections always sent well ahead of time and a follow up results email is always sent.  A shame such a promising system ends in a loss.

AC Milan 0 - 1 Tottenham Hopspur (And Gattuso In Hot Water)

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso following his conduct in Tuesday's match against Tottenham.

A magnificent 1-0 win for Spurs in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League tie was marred by ugly scenes after the game as Gattuso confronted Joe Jordan.

Having earlier clashed with the assistant Spurs coach on the touchline during the match, Gattuso pushed his head towards Jordan at the final whistle.

Several players from both sides became involved in a melee following the headbutt, although Gattuso later apologised for his actions.

"I lost control. There is no excuse for what I did. I take my responsibilities for that," he said.

"I was nervous. I didn't want to argue with players and I did it with him, but

I was wrong to do what I have done."

Gattuso is already suspended for the return leg at White Hart Lane after picking up a yellow card on Tuesday but could now face a lengthier ban.

Uefa's Control and Disciplinary Body will meet next Monday to discuss the case.

No further action will be taken, however, against Milan's Mathieu Flamini, whose two-footed challenge on Vedran Corluka was punished only by a yellow card.

Harry Redknapp has described the tackle as 'horrendous' but it does not appear possible that a tougher retrospective punishment could be imposed.

Ladbrokes Looks To Join Forces With Playtech

Bookmaker has reportedly asked investment banks to sound out one of the world’s leading gaming software developers regarding a merger.

The online gambling industry could be in for another major merger this year after reports emerged that giant operator Ladbrokes is in exploratory talks with Playtech Limited regarding unification. Isle of Man-based Playtech is one of the world’s leading developers of gaming software and Ladbrokes has allegedly instructed investment banks UBS and Greenhill to sound it out over strategic tie-ups including a share-based merger that could be worth up to £2.2 billion. According to a report from The Telegraph newspaper, Ladbrokes’ overtures to Playtech ‘highlight the radical thinking going on at the bookmaker under Richard Glynn, its new Chief Executive Officer,’ while any merger would transform the Harrow-based firm from a consumer-facing business with more than 2,700 betting shops to ‘one that also supplies software and online games to the betting, casino and poker industries’. Any deal for Ladbrokes could prove difficult as the software firm currently supplies many of the operator’s competitors including BetFred and, most crucially, William Hill. London-based William Hill owns 71 percent of the William Hill Online joint venture it established with Playtech in October of 2008 and has an option to buy the software company ‘after four and six years on an independent fair value basis’. The Telegraph revealed that the online venture generated £26.2 million in profits for Playtech last year while Neil Cooper, Finance Director for William Hill, was quoted as stating that his firm’s arrangements with Playtech were ‘commercially sensitive’. Ladbrokes is also in ‘ongoing’ talks with 888 Holdings, one of the world’s largest online gaming operators, regarding a separate merger.
