Free Premier League Betting Tips

Arsenal's trend of winning home matches comfortably in the Premier League hasn't gone unnoticed by Andrew Atherley, who tells us how we can profit from the stats available...

Arsenal's attacking philosophy opens up some good-value options against West Ham at the Emirates on Saturday, for which they are hot favourites at 1.2 to win the match.

The Gunners' good strike-rate on the Asian handicap - highlighted in this column earlier in the season - makes them worth considering at 1.97 off a -2.0 handicap, as they have delivered at least a two-goal margin of victory in 15 of their 23 home games since the start of last season.

The Arsenal double result on the Half Time/Full Time is 1.65 to back in the early betting and those odds are not quite in line with their strike-rate, as they have won 17 out of 23 in that manner since the start of last season. That 74% strike-rate equates to odds of 1.35.

It is clear from those stats that Arsenal often strike early - this season, only Chelsea have scored more often in the first 20 minutes of matches - but the key point with the Gunners is that they continue striving to score even when they are in front, which is the reason why they rack up so many wide-margin wins at home.

That means Arsenal to win both halves is an attractive odds-against option on Saturday at 2.14 to back. As the half time/full time stats indicate, Arsenal are not a team to sit back and defend a lead - since the start of last season they have won both halves in just over half (12 out of 23) of their home matches.

The strike-rate was even better last season when matches against the top six were excluded - on that measure, Arsenal won both halves in 10 out of 14 at home. With those matches being the ones most likely to be won by Arsenal (last season they won 13 out of 14 at home to teams outside the top six), the odds on them winning both halves should be significantly shorter.

Saturday's match against West Ham clearly fits into that highly winnable category and all those options - Arsenal off -2.0 on the Asian handicap, on the Half Time/Full Time and to win both halves - have to be viable options.

The perception of Manchester City under Roberto Mancini is that they have become more defence-minded - and no doubt that view hardened in many people's minds with Nigel de Jong's recent comment that "a clean sheet is holy" to the Italian.

"That's what he preaches: make sure we don't concede," said De Jong. "It is the mindset of every player. The belief is there. I don't want to say the belief wasn't there under Mark Hughes but with the manager coming from Italy defence is No 1."

The aspiration is not, however, matched by reality, especially on the road. In 14 away league games under Mancini, City have kept a clean sheet on just four occasions. As a comparison, City had a better strike-rate of clean sheets last season prior to Hughes's departure in December, with three clean sheets in nine away games.

Mancini had a clean sheet in his first away game, in a 3-0 win at Wolves on Boxing Day last year, but the next did not come for another four months, in a goalless draw at Arsenal. This season the strike-rate has improved with two clean sheets in four away matches, in a 0-0 at Tottenham and a 2-0 win at Wigan, but the overall figures suggest they are just as likely to keep a clean sheet against one of the big teams as they are against a struggling team.

That indicates City could well fail to repeat last season's clean sheet when they visit Molineux on Saturday.

Recommended bets

Arsenal to win both halves v West Ham at 2.14
No to a Manchester City clean sheet v Wolves at 1.72

The Odds Get Longer For United As Rooney Confirms His Intent To Leave

A shocked and bemused Sir Alex Ferguson revealed in Tuesday afternoon's pre - Champions leaguematchday three clash with Bursaspor that not only has Wayne Rooney injured an ankle and misses the Theatre of Dreams tussle but that he wants to walk away from Manchester United

United have been eased to 1-4 by Paddy Power to record a first European home win after their goalless Group C draw with Rangers and sneaked 1-0 win at Valencia.

And their Premier League odds continue to drift. They are now 5-1 to claim the title for a fourth time in five years.

At the press conferencea dejected Ferguson said "I had a meeting with him, and he intimated to me, in his own way, that he wanted to leave."

Reports on Monday had suggested that negotiations over Rooney's contract had broken down, as well as his relationship with the United manager.

Manchester City are now the new favourites to be his next club and are 7-4  to land the wantaway striker. The move would be considered hugely controversial in the city of Manchester and recognised as a major shift in the balance of power between the two clubs.

Despite denying any interest in the striker Real Madrid are second favourites to secure his signing at 7-2 with Coral.

Barcelona remain third-favourites and Coral are again biggest, at 7-1, that Rooney will be playing with Messi and co next season.

Hills, who thought there was little truth in the rumours on Monday night, have had to backtrack considerably.

Their 1-3 that Rooney would be a Red Devil next season has been dropped and they now go 7-2 that he remains at Old Trafford.

If United are to cash in on Rooney then it seems likely that he will be sold during the January transfer window.

Paddy Power go 1-2 that he leaves and Victor Chandler are  a top-priced 9-4 that he remains until at least the end of the season.

Champions League Betting - Inter Milan V Tottenham

Tottenham are underrated for their visit to face holders Inter at the San Siro on Wednesday night, writes James Eastham.

For Inter, Esteban Cambiasso and Diego Milito are definitely out. For Tottenham, Rafael van der Vaart is suspended and captain Ledley King is unavailable through injury. Jermain Defoe is a long-term injury absentee.

Rafael Benitez has made a decent start to what might have been billed the impossible job of following in Jose Mourinho's footsteps. Inter took 10pts from their opening four Serie A matches but their form has taken a turn for the worse as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Roma (Sept 25) and drew 0-0 at home to Juventus (Oct 3).

Spurs have won their last three games in all competitions and will be confident of getting something from the game after drawing 2-2 at Werder Bremen in their opening group match and thrashing FC Twente 4-1 a fortnight ago.

The price of 1.72 on Inter looks too short to me. The 6.0 on Tottenham without van der Vaart is a huge gamble, so the draw is the smartest choice at 3.95. If you want to cover the possibility of the draw and Tottenham winning, then lay Inter at 1.73.

Benitez may like to make this a tight, dour game but I believe Spurs' more enterprising approach will set the tone. Some wondered whether Harry Redknapp would take a more defensive approach, but nine goals in Spurs' opening two group games is a fairly emphatic answer. Even if Spurs play a 4-5-1, I suspect there will be plenty of chances at both ends.

Six of Inter's 11 games and nine of Spurs' 13 games in all competitions have had over 2.5 goals this season. Those stats equate to 63%, or 1.60, so the 1.81 on over 2.5 goals is a touch of value.

Inter defended magnificently on route to winning the Champions League last season, but the pace and variety of Spurs' attack will cause them problems (although the absence of van der Vaart is a blow). Both teams have scored in nine of Spurs' 13 games in 2010-11, so I would consider backing 'Yes' in this market at 1.75.

One Inter player that has responded to Benitez's arrival as coach is Samuel Eto'o. The debate about where he plays in Inter's 4-2-3-1 may continue, but his 2010-11 stats are unequivocal: four goals in two Champions League games, including a hat-trick in Inter's 4-0 win over Werder Bremen, two goals in Inter's 3-1 Italian Super Cup win over Roma and six goals in seven Serie A appearances. Back Eto'o to find the target anytime at a price around 2.2.

Best Bet: Both Teams to Score @ 1.75.
Other Recommended Bets: Lay Inter at 1.73 and Samuel Eto'o To Score @ 2.2.

* Inter v Tottenham, ITV1, Wednesday, 7.45pm kick-off

Murray The Man To Beat In Shanghai - Tennis Betting

Andy Murray has an impressive record against Jo Wilfried Tsonga and, with the Frenchman lacking match practice, the Brit is likely to triumph again.

Andy Murray (GBR) v Jo Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

By beating Jeremy Chardy, Andy Murray reached his fifth Masters Series quarter-final of 2010 and secured his qualification for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which takes place in London next month.

With the pressure off Murray's shoulders, having safeguarded his qualification for the end of season finale, the 23-year-old can now focus on his next challenge, a match against another Frenchman and a player he holds a 3-2 head-to-head series advantage over, Jo Wilfried Tsonga.

Twelfth seed Tsonga knocked out Florian Mayer of Germany 7-5, 6-3 in 85 minutes, saving three of four break points, the Frenchman will be looking to reach his third tour-level semi-final of the year and his first semi-final match at Master Series level in 2010. The enigmatic powerhouse will be trying to recapture the form he showed when defeating Murray at the 2008 Australian Open, but Murray holds the advantage coming into this match, winning their last two head-to-heads.

Murray is the understandable odds-on favourite at 1.4. Known as a counter-puncher, he is starting to play a more attacking game, winning nine of his last 10 matches at Master Series level. He's also triumphed in six of his last seven against a big server and five of his last six when priced as a moderate favourite. Tsonga on the other hand has lost four in a row against top 10 players and four of his last five as underdog.

The fact that Shanghai is only Tsonga's second tournament since his loss to Murray in this year's Wimbledon quarter final. A first round loss against Jarkko Nieminen in Tokyo last week only highlights his vulnerability.

I believe that there is not much value in backing Murray at such short odds so my bet of the day will be to back the fiery Scot to win in straight sets with the possibility of a tie break being played.

Recommended bet: Back Andy Murray 2-0 @ 1.95
Back Andy Murray @ 1.4 to win the match

by Ben Caudell.

Formula 1 Betting - Red Bull Looking Good In Japan

The Red Bull pair of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber dominated yet another session of Formula One practice as they topped the timesheets in the second practice at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Red Bull again signalled they would be the team to beat this weekend with Vettel following up his fastest time in opening practice with the benchmark time of one minute 31.465 seconds in session two at Suzuka.

Vettel won the race from pole position last year and is on target to repeat that feat again, although team-mate and championship leader Webber is hot on his heels.

Australian driver Webber enjoys a 21-point cushion over his team-mate in the drivers' standings, and finished just 0.395secs down, with Renault's Robert Kubica taking third.

The session was a frustrating one for McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who was forced to sit out all but the final 10 minutes as his team repaired his damaged car.

Hamilton's Suzuka weekend was just 44 minutes old when he sustained major damage to the front end of his car in a shunt at the Degner Curve in opening practice.

His mechanics worked frantically on the rebuild but could only get the car running in time for the last minutes of the second session, and the Briton has it all to do if he hopes to claw back to something approaching the pace of the Red Bulls.

Hamilton's late cameo brought him eight further laps of running to go with the nine he managed in session one, although his best time of 1.33.481 was over two seconds shy of Vettel.

The Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were much improved from the morning, as was Hamilton's team-mate Jenson Button, who also suffered a hairy moment at Degner in practice one but emerged unscathed.

Alonso, who has won the past two grands prix to sit second in the drivers' standings, 11 points down on Webber, posted a time just under nine-tenths slower than Vettel on his way to fourth, while Massa was one-tenth and one place further back.

Button's sixth place represented an improvement on his first practice time, but with over a second to make up on the Red Bulls, he - and indeed Hamilton and Alonso - may need rely on Saturday's forecast heavy rainfall to bridge the significant gap.

Webber, Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel and Button are all separated by just 25 points - one race win - heading into the final four races of the season.

Kubica's run to third place, 0.735secs down on Vettel, came despite an early spin while negotiating the Esses section, while the Pole's Renault team-mate Vitaly Petrov was an impressive seventh.

Michael Schumacher, a six-time winner at Suzuka, was another victim of the Degner Curve, running wide there but recovering on his way to eighth place, ahead of Force India's Adrian Sutil and the Williams of Nico Hulkenberg.

Takeover Of Liverpool FC Agreed

Liverpool have confirmed that a takeover deal has been agreed with the owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

New England Sports Ventures (NESV), the parent company of the Red Sox have seen a bid accepted by the Anfield board.

Current Liverpool owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks had vowed to 'resist any attempt to sell the club without due process or agreement', and have not given their consent for a deal to be pushed through.

However, the Reds have been able to put an agreement in place - although the sale is still conditional on Premier League approval, resolution of the dispute concerning board membership and other matters.

It was reported on Tuesday that the owners of the MLB giants, led by John W. Henry, were closing on a deal for the Premier League outfit.

It was claimed that a rival bid from an Asian consortium was also being prepared, but no move has been made on that front.

So who are the new owners

NESV, who own a portfolio of companies including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Rousch Fenway Racing, have now emerged as the only bidder.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton told the club's official website: "I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive.

"The board decided to accept NESV's proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox.

"We've met them in Boston, London and Liverpool over several weeks and I am immensely impressed with what they have achieved and with their vision for Liverpool Football Club

"By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team.

"I am only disappointed that the owners have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale."

The boardroom battle between American owners Hicks and Gillett and their England-based colleagues escalated to a new level on Tuesday.

With news of two new "excellent" bids having been received, the pair, led primarily by Hicks, tried to effect a coup by removing managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre from their positions on the board minutes before a meeting to discuss the new offers.

What Needs To Happen

It was intended to allow the Americans to regain control of the sale process, allowing them the final say on any offer.

Hicks and Gillett wanted to instal Mack Hicks, one of Tom's sons, and Lori Kay McCutcheon, financial controller at Hicks Holdings.

This was rebuffed as the two club officials, backed by chairman Broughton, out-voted the Americans three to two.

The club issued an unprecedented statement detailing yesterday's machinations in which they also revealed this boardroom issue was now the subject of a legal review.

However, the statement pointedly went on to stress that Broughton, Purslow and Ayre would "continue to explore every possible route to achieving a sale of the club at the earliest opportunity".

There has been a division on the board from the moment Hicks and Gillett announced in April they wanted to end their three-year tenure at Anfield, but that split has turned into a chasm.

Broughton was appointed as independent chairman as part of the sale process, ensuring the Americans no longer had a majority vote and could not prevent a sale that was in the best interests of the club.

Central to the whole saga has been next week's looming deadline for the repayment or refinancing of £282million of loans - owed principally to the Royal Bank of Scotland, who are reportedly backing the sale to NESV.

Horse Racing News - Eamon Tyrrell & Jason Behan Banned For Three Years

Irish trainer Eamon Tyrrell and jockey Jason Behan have both been banned for three years by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) disciplinary panel.

They had previously been found guilty of "deliberately preventing a horse from winning" at Newcastle on 4 August.

The BHA concluded Behan had not ridden the horse Casela Park on its merits.

The five-year-old, sent off at odds of 17-2 in the register@sportpool.co.uk Handicap, finished sixth off top weight of 9st 13lb, beaten two lengths.

He went on to run again two days later at Musselburgh, finishing fourth on that occasion, and has not raced since.

Casela Park also received a ban of 42 days from 6 October to 16 November.

The panel's summary of the case found: "The gelding was subjected to strong and persistent episodes of restraint in the last two and a half furlongs, and was manoeuvred several times away from gaps and back behind other runners.

"It was running on well in the last 50 yards [despite an absence of any driving or encouragement] and lost by just two lengths. But for its treatment by Behan, it would have won.

"That may seem a strong conclusion about a race in which it finished sixth, but the more the panel viewed the recordings, the more it felt driven to this view."

In banning the pair the BHA submitted that there were three aggravating features of this case: the nature of the ride itself; what they describe as "the dishonesty of the ride"; and the untruthful accounts given both to the Newcastle Stewards and the Panel by Tyrrell and Behan.

During the disciplinary hearing both Tyrrell and Behan drew attention to their previous good disciplinary records. They also said they had not gained financially from this race (or the later race at Musselburgh), and each pointed out his parlous financial position. Behan said he had no other source of income but racing.

The panel did not view the nature of the ride or the dishonesty involved in deliberately stopping the horse from winning (which cheated both win and place backers) as particular aggravating features.

They also concluded that "Cheating of punters will happen whenever a horse is stopped, and the blatant restraint by Behan might even be thought a less insidious danger to the sport than a smoother, less eye-catching ride which also prevents a win.

"However the evidence given both to the Newcastle Stewards and to the Panel has been found to be deliberately false, and does make the case worse. They did not have to lie when found out."

The BHA added: "While it is correct that there is no evidence of financial gain here, that is at least in part because the furore generated by the Newcastle ride caused changed riding plans for Musselburgh, and, perhaps, changed betting plans.

"Even taking full account of the previous good disciplinary records of both Tyrrell and Behan, the fact remains that they have committed one of the sport's cardinal sins."
