Free Betting Tip - St Helens To Win The Super League Grand Final

British sports fans who take great delight in mocking the fact that baseball's World Series is contested solely by teams based in the USA and Toronto clearly aren't up on their rugby league. After all, the Super League is classified as a European competition despite 14 of the 16 participants being English, with just one Welsh and one French side adding a bit of continental flavour. As ever, two clubs from the north of England are meeting in this year's Grand Final.

The Warriors have the weaker Grand Final record

Since the introduction of the Grand Final in 1998, St Helens have reached the season finale more times than any other club - this is their eighth appearance in 13 years- and have been crowned champions on four occasions previously, a tally only matched by Leeds Rhinos. The fact that they've been beaten at this stage in each of the last three campaigns counts against them in the eyes of many punters, yet their record of four wins from seven finals is still far more impressive than that of their opponents. Since taking the inaugural title in 1998, Wigan have been back three times, losing them all, including one against St Helens a decade ago.

Regular season advantage doesn't really exist

In addition to St Helens' poor recent Grand Final displays, another factor in establishing Wigan Warriors as 1.77 favourites is that they were league winners in the regular season, collecting four points more than the Merseysiders. But the lesson learned over the last few years has been that the team who impress the most in the early stages of the campaign often don't have enough left to offer when it matters most. Three of the last five Grand Finals were won by the side that finished lower in the regular season, a trend which obviously favours second-placed St Helens.

Awards don't always lead to silverware

The Warriors have been given a whole heap of awards this week, with winger Pat Richards named Man of Steel, stand-off Sam Tomkins again being announced young player of the year, Michael McGuire earning the coach of the year honour and the team as a whole earning the title club of the year. Even if you ignore the possibility of complacency creeping in now that they've effectively been told they've been untouchable in 2010, a negative trend exists whereby the Man of Steel has played for the Grand Final winners in only one of the last six seasons.

St Helens have all the momentum...

Supporting the suggestion that St Helens are conforming to the cliché of "peaking at the right time" is their current form - they head into Saturday's clash at Old Trafford on a run of five successive victories, three achieved by margins of 20 points or more. By contrast, Wigan Warriors have lost two of their last six, with their most significant stutter coming in their first play-off match against Leeds Rhinos, which meant that they had to jump through two further hurdles to make it to the Theatre of Dreams, whereas St Helens were able to secure progress to the Grand Final playing one game fewer.

...and the Merseysiders are hugely dominant head-to-head

St Helens available at 2.26 on betfair, a great bet because they have an incredible record against their Greater Manchester rivals. They've won a staggering 15 of the last 19 encounters between the clubs, losing just three, and their successes in that stretch include the heaviest of the bunch, a whopping 75-0 win in 2005; a 14-10 win in last season's play-offs, and the latest, by 26-24 at Wigan's very own DW Stadium back in June.

Ryder Cup Betting Tip - Who Will Be Europes Hot Shot?

According to Colin Montgomerie, every member of his team is going to play on Friday, and if he isn't bluffing, somebody you wouldn't expect to get off to a good start will, but who that will be is anybody's guess? And even if one or two of the team's lesser lights do win their first matches that doesn't guarantee they'll play again until Sunday's singles.

Captain Monty will have his idea of who the cornerstones of his side are but the list of contenders is a long one. Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, and Martin Kaymer, the Molinari brothers and possibly Padraig Harrington and Ross Fisher are all key Euro players but for me Monty's number one talisman has to be wildcard pick Luke Donald.

Luke's having yet another tremendous season, with a plethora of high finishes, and for a change, he's even managed a win - the Madrid Masters. He doesn't win anywhere near as much as he should in stroke play events but his match play record is simply superb.

Unbeaten in four Walker Cup singles matches, his record in the amateur event reads seven points from a possible eight. He's a duel winner of the World Cup and has an impressive Ryder Cup record too, of his seven matches to date; he's won five, halved one and lost just one.

His narrow defeat in Sunday's Tour Championship could be construed as a bit of a negative but when you consider his win in Madrid this year came one week after he'd blown the PGA Championship at Wentworth I don't think we need to worry. Luke has bouncebackability in abundance.

There are few, if any, players in either side in better current form - couple that with his outstanding match play record and you don't need to look any further than Luke.

Verdict: Back Luke Donald @ 10.0

Red Bull Set To Dominate Singapore

Red Bull produced a clean sweep in practice for the Singapore Grand Prix on Friday as Sebastian Vettel followed team-mate Mark Webber by setting the quickest time in the second session.

Under floodlights at the Marina Bay circuit, the German set a time of one minute 46.660 seconds to go over six-tenths of a second quicker than Webber, who had topped the timesheets in the opening session

The top five places in session two were all occupied by this season's title contenders, with defending world champion Jenson Button third - albeit over a second down on Vettel - ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Button's McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who stands five points behind championship leader Webber, was fifth in the 90-minute session which, unlike the earlier run, was conducted in dry conditions.

Despite Vettel's apparently dominant performance, his time could have been bettered by Alonso but for a mistake from the Spaniard when on a flying lap with 20 minutes remaining.

Alonso had just set the quickest first sector time and a personal best in the second before being caught out midway through the third.

He struck a kerb exiting turn 17, forcing him to catch the back end of his car as it attempted to oversteer.

Alonso then attempted to brake for turn 18, but he found himself unable to turn into the corner and was forced to use the short run-off road.

Although Alonso managed to reverse his Ferrari back onto the track, the car soon ground to a halt - leaving its driver to walk back to the pits.

With Hamilton 1.158secs adrift of Vettel, Rubens Barrichello was sixth for Williams ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg was eighth with team-mate Michael Schumacher - who is contesting his first night race this weekend - in tenth behind Renault's Robert Kubica.

However, they were all at least two seconds down on Vettel's time, which was also eight seconds quicker than that managed by Webber during an opening session which started 90 minutes after a rainstorm.

Although temperatures remained as high as 29 degrees centigrade as daylight gave way to dusk and eventually to the dark in session two, the 72 per cent humidity ensured the track dried only slowly.

As in the first session Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi and Nick Heidfeld, in his first race this year after replacing Pedro de la Rosa, were again 12th and 13th, separated by 0.120secs.

Force India's Adrian Sutil joined Alonso on the casualty list after hitting a kerb in the chicane, sending him airborne by a few feet before landing on his front-left wheel, breaking the suspension.

Hispania Racing duo Bruno Senna and Christian Klien, due to race in his first grand prix for four years on Sunday after replacing Sakon Yamamoto who has been sidelined with food poisoning, finished 23rd and 24th, both over eight seconds down.

Betfair Have Vettel priced at 2.96 & Webber next at 4.3.

Vettel the Heavy Favourite at the moment Also topping the Qualifying bets and the Fastest Lap at a price of 3.6

Alex Ferguson on United's Premier League Challenge

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United's meetings with Chelsea will decide the outcome of the Premier League title race.

The Red Devils finished one point adrift of the Stamford Bridge side last season after suffering home and away defeats to Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Despite the regular threat of Arsenal and the ambition of Manchester City, Ferguson feels it is the reigning champions who are their main rivals this term.

"The Premier League is such a difficult league, it's almost tribalism and you can't dismiss that impact when it comes to winning the Premier League," the Scot told CNN International.

Main danger

"I always look at the team that wins the league the year before, you have to have a target to try to work on.

"It's up to the rest, including us, to do that and Chelsea are the champions. They've had a good start to the season and I look upon them as the main danger to us.

"The games that will matter will probably be the ones against each other. Last year we lost both of those games and therefore that decided the title."

Ferguson missed Wednesday night's 5-2 Carling Cup third round triumph away to Scunthorpe as he was in Spain scouting forthcoming UEFA Champions League opponents Valencia.

Betfair have Chelsea as favourites for the title at 1.91 and Manchester United at 3.75

Fergie on the champions league.

The vastly-experienced coach has identified Real Madrid as a threat in Europe's Premier club competition this term as they are now under the guidance of former sparring partner Jose Mourinho.

He added: "You expect great improvement from Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho.

"Barcelona are still the most attractive team and they will be one of the main dangers with Inter Milan the most difficult to beat.

"They've all got their different qualities, but it's such an exciting tournament, you can't help but look forward to it. The Champions League is the most fantastic competition now."

Betfair have Barcelona as the favourites at 3.95 followed by Chelea at 5.9 , Then Real Madrid at 6.4 and United at 10.0

England Get Ready For The Ashes

Monty Panesar is included in England's Ashes squad, as is Chris Tremlett and Steven Davies, but there's no place for Ravi Bopara...

Monty Panesar is the most surprising inclusion in England's Ashes squad for this winter's tour. The Sussex spinner, who moved from Northamptonshire this year and had a good season for his county, has been selected as cover for Graeme Swann.

Panesar made an important contribution to last summer's Ashes win, albeit in an unexpected fashion, when he joined James Anderson at the crease late in the evening session on day five at Cardiff and batted out the remaining overs to earn England a draw, which in the end proved crucial. He hasn't represented England in any form of the game since.

There's also a place in the squad for Yorkshire's all-rounder Tim Bresnan who has played regularly for England in all forms of the game over the last year or so, including being an ever-present in their T20 World Cup team. Bresnan also played every match in their recent ODI Series win over Pakistan , which England won 3-2, though he's not necessarily guaranteed to be an automatic choice in the Test team.

Chris Tremlett of Surrey is also in the Test squad as back-up for the likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Steven Finn. Steven Davies, also of Surrey, gets the nod as back-up for wicket-keeper Matt Prior ahead of the likes of Chris Read, Tim Ambrose, James Foster and Craig Kieswetter. Davies had a good ODI Series against Pakistan with both bat and gloves but is the only uncapped member of the squad when it comes to Test cricket.

Ian Bell is included after recovering from a lengthy injury whilst Kevin Pietersen is re-called after being "rested" for the Pakistan ODI series to re-find some form with the bat after being loaned out to Surrey, but there's no place in the squad for Ravi Bopara.

Pace bowler Steven Finn has been handed a central contract alongside Jonathan Trott, who has had a fine summer for England with the bat, despite being criticised for having a low strike rate in the shorter forms of the game.

England are 3.55 to win the Ashes with Australia 1.76 and it's 6.4 the drawn series. On another Betfair market, England are 2.08 to retain the Ashes.

Full Test Squad:

Andrew Strauss (captain) (Middlesex)

Alastair Cook (vice-captain) (Essex)

James Anderson (Lancashire)

Ian Bell (Warwickshire)

Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire)

Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)

Paul Collingwood (Durham)

Steven Davies (wicketkeeper) (Surrey)

Steven Finn (Middlesex)

Eoin Morgan (Middlesex)

Monty Panesar (Sussex)

Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire)

Matt Prior (wicketkeeper) (Sussex)

Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire)

Chris Tremlett (Surrey)

Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire)

Betting Tip - Europe To Bring Back The Ryder Cup

Forget patriotism, there are stone-cold, solid punting reasons for backing Europe to wrest back the Ryder Cup from the US says BB golf blogger, Paul Krishnamurty

"Gone are the days when the European side included lower-ranking players, without much experience of big events. Think Philip Walton, Philip Price or Andrew Coltart."

European golf is on an all-time high
Since the advent of the Race to Dubai, there has been a distinct sense that the balance of power is shifting, with Europe replacing the US as the golfing world's epicentre. However, hosting the big events is one thing, winning them is another and 2010 has seen a significant development in that respect, too.

Following very meagre returns during the previous decade, European Tour players have dominated the big events. The last three majors were won by European Tour players, two of whom are in the Celtic Manor line-up. The World Matchplay final was contested by two Englishmen. Eight European winners on this year's PGA Tour is easily their best ever return.

Team Europe has greater strength in depth than ever before
Gone are the days when the European side included lower-ranking players, without much experience of big events. Think Philip Walton, Philip Price or Andrew Coltart, for example. Such is the abundance of riches, captain Monty faced the ultimate selection headache, able to leave out two world-class, multiple PGA Tour winners in Paul Casey and Justin Rose.

For the first time ever, there are more Europeans than Americans in the world's top-30. Of course, as Walton and Price proved, rankings superiority is no guarantee of success, because matchplay is such a great leveller. Nevertheless, it can only improve their claim.

Home advantage is significant, especially if the weather turns
The home side always enjoys a significant advantage, thanks to a partisan crowd and superior knowledge of conditions. Europe's record in home ties is particularly impressive, losing only once in the last quarter-century and outscoring the US by 16 points during that period. That record probably owes much to the fact that relatively few Americans have made for good travellers, especially in typically British bad-weather. If autumn in Wales turns out to be as wet and windy as usual, numerous US players are unlikely to enjoy the challenge. When presented with such conditions at the K Club in 2006, Europe won by a record margin.

Europe are fresher and should be better prepared
Whereas all bar three of the Europeans have a free weekend to finalise preparations, nine of the US side are 'distracted' by the small matter of a $10M tournament. Indeed, after a month of championship golf, competing for the Fedex Cup, few will have had much time to think about Celtic Manor. There is of course an alternative argument that the busier players are more 'match-fit', but even so they will have very little time to gel as a team.

Monty has the makings of a great captain
Of all the great European players of recent decades, Monty played the role of on-field captain better than anyone. He always came alive in team golf, as a player and a person, in a way we rarely saw when competing as an individual. He knows exactly what it takes to win this cup. His back-up team includes the inspired choices of Darren Clarke and Sergio Garcia, two more Ryder Cup heroes who know exactly how to create a determined, united dressing room. I'm expecting to see Team Europe arrive on the first tee in confident, prepared mood, while the US players will have barely arrived in the country.

Paul Krishnamurty says: Back Europe to win Ryder Cup @ 1.74

Where Is Your Money For Saturday's Betfred Sprint Cup?

David Nicholls says Aidan O'Brien should be worried about Regal Parade in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday.

The six-year-old Pivotal gelding won last year's Group One contest and bounced right back to form at the top level in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville last time.

O'Brien's Starspangledbanner is the probable favourite following victories in the Golden Jubilee and July Cup and he now looks likely to line up after impressing his handler in a piece of work on Wednesday morning.

However, Nicholls insists his horse has just as good a chance of landing more Group One glory.

The North Yorkshire trainer told sportinglife.com: "They'd be as much worried about me as I am about them.

"You don't win two Group One races by being a slow donkey. He's the best horse I've got in the yard at the moment.

"We didn't pay a lot for him but that's of no importance. We'll have just paid the VAT on Starspangledbanner compared to what we paid for Regal Parade.

"If we get beaten, we get beaten, but it won't be because we're not trying our best."

The going is currently good, good to soft in places at Haydock and while that would be ideal for Regal Parade, Nicholls is hoping the ground doesn't dry out any further.

"One of the biggest factors from his win last year and at Deauville was that he needs a bit of juice in the ground," Nicholls continued.

"I wouldn't go as far to say he needs soft conditions but he very much appreciates being able to get his toe in. If it's fast he'll run alright but when he needs to pick them up they run away from him, but when it's good to soft they slow down and he kills them at the end.

"He's in good form anyway and we're looking forward to it."

Whatever happens this weekend, Nicholls has one more race in mind for Regal Parade this season, at Longchamp on Arc weekend.

"After Saturday he'll go back to France for the Prix de la Foret the day before the Arc over seven furlongs. With the ground sure to be soft he'll go there and that'll be it until next season."

Regal Parade is 11/4 with Sky Bet for Saturday's Sprint Cup.
